The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point athletic department and Pointers Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are hosting a sign-up for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) registry on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, inside Marshfield Clinic Champions Hall from 9:00am-3:00pm.
The Pointers are inviting anyone from the Stevens Point community to take part in this life-saving event. The NMDP is the global nonprofit leader in cell therapy, helping find cures and saving lives for patients with blood cancers and disorders. The registry helps find possible blood stem cell donors and gives access to life-saving treatment to every patient. Over 130,000 people have received cell therapy since 1987 through the NMDP, with another 41 million potential donors worldwide that future patients have access to through each donor search.
While a blood stem cell donation can cure or treat more than 75 diseases including leukemia or sickle cell, 70% of patients don't have a fully matched donor in their family. In those cases, doctors turn to the NMDP Registry to look for an unrelated donor who can help. Once a match has been made, NMDP pays for all travel and donation-related costs, including childcare, pet boarding and lost wages.
