UWSP Softball Sweeps Lake Forest in Road Doubleheader

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The No. 22 UW-Stevens Point softball team (19-3) swept Lake Forest (8-10) in a non-conference twin bill on Thursday. The Pointers doubled up the Foresters in both games, winning game one, 2-1, and game two, 4-2.

Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community), Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had three hits apiece on the day. Heckendorf scored a run in each game. Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) and Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had two hits each. Klicker had an RBI in each game and Thompson drove in the decisive run in game two.

In the circle, Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) was the winning pitcher in both games. She tossed 7.2 innings on the day with four strikeouts. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) earned the save in both games with six strikeouts over 4.0 frames.

Game 1 – UWSP 2, LFC 1
Thompson singled to begin the game. Two batters later, she moved to third on a single by Baker. A double steal put UWSP on the board with a 1-0 lead.

LFC answered back with a run in the bottom of the first on a bunt single, two steals and a groundout.

Heckendorf started the third inning with a single. Thompson reached on an error and both runners stole bases to get into scoring position. Another LFC error allowed the Pointers to regain the lead at 2-1.

Harwood and Zygowski held the lead there combining on a two-hitter. The duo struck out five in the game one win.

Game 2 – UWSP 4, LFC 2
Baker and Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the first as UWSP again took a 1-0 lead in the first.

Thompson drew a one-out walk in the third. Klicker and Baker each singled to load the bases. After a fielder's choice cut down the runner at the plate, a wild pitch allowed the Pointers to go up, 2-0.

The Foresters got a run back in the third on a leadoff triple and a groundout. LFC tied the game in the fourth on a pair of hits and a UWSP miscue.

Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) began the seventh with a pinch-hit single. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) moved Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), who reentered to run, to second on a sac bunt. Heckendorf reached on an infield single and both stole bases to get into scoring position. Thompson singled to give UWSP the lead back. Klicker also singled to drive in another.

Zygowski struck out two in a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Harwood struck out three in 3.2 innings of work.

The Pointers travel to St. Norbert on Tuesday (April 8) for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
