UWSP Softball Splits at UW-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (26-8, 5-5) split a twin bill at UW-River Falls (18-16, 3-7) on Sunday. The Pointers prevailed with a 1-0 win in game one, but dropped game two, 3-1.

Hitting was stifled for both teams as hits were even at two apiece in game one and three a side in game two. Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) was the only Pointers with a hit in each game.

Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWRF 0
Hailee Thomspon hit a double to start the game. Klicker followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drew a walk, the first of 12 in the game for UWSP, to load the bases. But UWSP could not break on top.

The Pointers drew three walks in the third, but left the bases loaded again without a run scored.

In the fourth, Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a leadoff walk. With two down, Klicker and Roberts coaxed consecutive walks to load the bases. Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) also drew a walk, pushing in the only run of the game.

Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) struck out six in 4.0 scoreless innings. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) got the save with 3.0 scoreless innings. She struck out five.

The 12 walks drawn were the most since a school record 13 against Georgetown (Ky.) in 2000.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWRF 3
The Pointers got a runner aboard in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth, but were not able to push a run home.

In the bottom of the sixth, UWRF scored three runs on two hits and a walk.

Back-to-back errors with two outs in the seventh gave the Pointers their lone run of game two.

Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Harwood struck out seven in 3.0 innings of relief.

The Pointers host UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (April 30) in Wisconsin Rapids. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
