PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The No. 21 UW-Stevens Point softball team (23-5, 2-2) split a league doubleheader at UW-Platteville (20-8, 3-1) on Wednesday. UWSP won game one, 7-2, before settling for a split with a 3-1 defeat in game two.
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) went 4-for-4 with an RBI in game one.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had two hits apiece and each drove in two in game one.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) hit a home run and drove in a run in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, UWP 2
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) led off game one with a single. Two batters later,
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) drew a walk. Holberg singled with two away to load the bases. Smith followed with a two-run single.
The Pioneers tied the game with two runs on two hits, a walk and an error in the fifth inning.
Roberts put UWSP back in front with a home run to lead off the sixth. Holberg singled and Smith doubled to move pinch runner
Parker Zipperer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) to third.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) drove in one with a single. Two batters later, Heckendorf doubled to push in two runs for a 6-2 lead.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit a triple to start the seventh. Two batters later, she was cut down at the plate as Roberts reached on the fielder's choice. Holberg followed with a single and Roberts raced home from first.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) tossed 4.0 scoreless frames with four strikeouts.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 3.0 and struck out one.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWP 3
UWP broke a scoreless tie in the third with two runs on three hits and an error. Zygowski limited the damage to two runs by stranding the bases loaded.
Thompson hit a double to start the fourth, the lone hit of game two for the Pointers. Klicker drew a walk and both runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Roberts hit a sac fly, but UWSP could only get one in the frame.
Harwood and Zygowski had two strikeouts each in the circle in game two.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 19) for a 12:00 p.m. twin bill.
