ELSAH, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) opened the season with an 88-55 win over Illinois College (0-2) at the Laura Williams Memorial Classic.
Emma Kilpatrick (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) recorded a double-double in her Pointers' debut with a game-high 17 points and she added 10 rebounds.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) nearly equaled the feat with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) led all players with 13 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive glass.
Jessilyn Ernst (Pardeeville, Wis./Pardeeville) scored the first points of the season with a layup in the opening minute.
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) buried a pair of three-pointers for a 10-9 lead.
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) hit a three and Ernst completed an and-one as UWSP led, 18-15 after one.
Rice hit a jumper in the first minute of the second quarter.
Kate Vanden Berg (Appleton, Wis./North) and Ernst hit layups on consecutive possessions for a 24-18 advantage. Hagen made a couple layups and
Laney Panich (Wautoma, Wis./Wautoma) completed an and-one for a 35-29 halftime lead.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) hit a pair of threes and had eight points as the lead reached double figures. Hagen and Rice added four points apiece and a layup by
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) gave UWSP a 60-42 lead after three.
Kilpatrick nailed two triples and made a layup as UWSP opened the fourth with a 12-6.
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) added four points in the quarter.
Annika Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) and
Egan Bierowski (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) each drilled a three as UWSP pulled away late.
The Pointers close out the weekend against Spalding on Sunday (Nov. 9). Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
