STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-0) outscored visiting Lakeland (0-5) by a 26-13 margin in the second quarter as the Pointers came away with a 69-51 win.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) made five three-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) and
Jessilyn Ernst (Pardeeville, Wis./Pardeeville) were also in double figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Rice and Ernst led the team with six rebounds each.
Smith nailed her first three of the game for a 3-2 lead early. Rice scored the next four points as UWSP went up, 7-2.
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) and Ernst each made a bucket late and UWSP was ahead, 11-8, after one.
Ernst scored five points early in the second. Smith added five of her own with another three in the mix.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) scored seven-consecutive points for UWSP and Murphy buried a three in the closing seconds as UWSP took a 37-21 lead into the half.
Rice and Smith combined for three three-pointers in the third. Ernst added five points in the quarter and the lead was 53-32 heading to the fourth.
Rice had four points early in the fourth. Smith buried another three as did
Annika Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) to seal the win.
The Pointers are back in action on Dec. 6 at 5:00 p.m. against Bethany Lutheran in Quandt Fieldhouse. UWSP will be holding a toy drive and ask fans to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation at the game.
