STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After nine-consecutive road matches and 25 days between home games, the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (16-13, 3-3) took advantage of the raucous crowd in Berg Gym to sweep visiting UW-La Crosse (19-11, 1-5) in conference play on Wednesday night.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led all players with 13 kills, the lone player in the match in double figures.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) also led all players in assists with 28, just missing a double-double with nine digs.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) extended her double-figure digs streak to 17 matches with a team-best 18 on the night.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) and
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic) each had a service ace early as UWSP jumped in front, 9-8, after a 4-0 burst.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) had three kills as the Pointers took an 18-15 advantage. Thomka and
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had a kill and a combined block late as UWSP took the first set, 25-22.
Shaw and
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) bookended a 5-0 run with kills as the Pointers took an 8-6 lead in the second. Thomka posted a trio of kills as UWSP went up, 14-9. Thomka had three kills and a block as the Pointers closed out a 25-21 set two win with a 7-2 run.
Cregan and Trieloff had two kills apiece as the teams played to an 11-11 tie in the third. Trieloff and Thomka added two kills each late and Cregan ended the sweep with a kill in a 25-21 set three victory.
The Pointers are back in action on Nov. 7 with a 7:00 p.m. home match against UW-Whitewater.
