WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (13-8) got a pair of wins at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday. The Pointers started the day with a 3-2 win over Hardin Simmons (13-5) before getting a 3-1 win over Lawrence (16-9) to wrap up the weekend.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) posted double-doubles in both matches and was named to the all-tournament team. She racked up 36 assists and 17 digs against HSU. She added 33 assists and 10 digs in the win over LU.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) was also named to the all-tournament team after a match-high 20 kills against HSU. Olivia Puakner had nine kills in each match.
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) had a team-high 10 kills versus Lawrence.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led the Pointers in digs in both matches with 22 and 12.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) was in double figures with 20 and 10 digs.
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic) had 10 aces on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, Hardin-Simmons 2 (23-25, 25-13, 26-24, 18-25, 15-7)
Lucero had a pair of service aces as UWSP jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Lucero had another ace flanked by kills from Shaw and
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) for a 14-10 advantage. Paukner had three kills late, but HSU used a 9-1 run to take the first set.
Shaw had four kills and Thomka a pair of aces for a 12-2 start to the second for the Pointers. Strege had an ace, a kill and a block as the lead grew to 19-7.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) finished off the set win with Consecutive kills.
Shaw had four kills as UWSP went up 4-3 in the third.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) had three kills and Lucero served back-to-back aces for a 23-22 edge. Shaw added a pair of kills as UWSP went ahead, 2-1.
Strege had a block and an ace as UWSP went in front, 7-3, to start the fourth. Strege had two more kills for a 13-11 lead. Thomka had a kill and an ace as HSU pushed the match to a decisive fifth set.
Cregan had four kills in the fifth set. Lucero had another service ace and Shaw capped the five-set victory with her 20th kill.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Lawrence 1 (25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19)
Thomka and Cregan combined for three kills and a block as UWSP took a 5-1 lead early. Strege service consecutive aces for a 9-7 advantage. Erlandson, Lucero and Nevins each had an ace with Trieloff, Paukner and Cregan adding two kills each as the Pointers took the first set.
Strege had three kills and an ace for a 13-4 UWSP lead in the second. Nevin added another ace and UWSP overcame a 6-0 Lawrence run to pull out the second set with a 6-1 finish.
Lucero and Erlandson each had an ace and Thomka had three kills as UWSP led, 14-9. Cregan and Thomka each had a kill, but LU used a 4-0 finish to take the third set.
Thomka and Paukner had a pair of kills each as UWSP trailed 8-7 in the fourth. Paukner had two-straight kills to cap a 10-3 run as UWSP went up, 18-14. Cregan had a pair of late kills and Lucero ended the match with an ace.
The Pointers travel to UW-Stout on Wednesday (Oct. 15) for a 7:00 p.m. league match.
