OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-4, 3-3) erased a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter only to fall short in a 54-50 loss at No. 4/5 UW-Oshkosh (17-0, 6-0). On Wednesday night.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led the Pointers with a game-high 17 points.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) was also in double figures with 14 points. The duo each went 7-for-12 from the floor. Thomson was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line and had a team-high eight rebounds.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) hit a three and Thomson made a jumper to give the Pointers an early 5-3 lead. Thomson scored the next four UWSP points and the Pointers were within 15-13 at the end of one.
Rice tied the game with the first points of the second quarter. Thomson had back-to-back makes for a 19-17 advantage.
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) made a layup for a 23-21 lead, but the Titan finished the half with a 6-0 run.
Rice hit a pair of baskets to halt a 6-0 start to the third by UWO. Rice and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) combined for six points, but the Pointers trailed, 48-33, heading to the fourth.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) had four points and Thomson added seven as the Pointers staged a furious comeback. Rice made a layup with 1:59 remaining as the Pointers tied the game at 50-50. The Titans took the lead with 32 seconds remaining and UWSP was held without a field goal attempt until a three at the buzzer.
The Pointers return home to face UW-Eau Claire in the final game of the league first half. Tip-off on Saturday (Jan. 25) in Berg Gym is slated for 3:00 p.m.
