STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (11-3, 1-2) came up just short in an 84-83 loss in overtime to No. 14 UW-La Crosse (11-3, 2-1).
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) led a quartet of Pointers in double figures with 19 points.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) added 18.
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had 17 points and
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) put up 10.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Pointers with nine rebounds.
Butler and Krohn had a layup each early for a 4-3 advantage. Miron made a layup to tie the game at 10-10. He hit a three to tie the game at 13-all and
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had a layup to knot the game at 17-17.
Miron made a pair of free throws with 5:04 left in the first half for a brief 24-23 lead. Bolden buried a three to stop an 8-0 run by UWL.
Grant Manz (Kiel, Wis./Kiel) went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line late, but UWSP trailed 42-31 at halftime.
Abdul-Wahid had six early points and Bolden hit another three as UWSP got within one with a 15-5 start to the second half.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) completed an and-one and the Pointers took a 54-49 lead following a jumper by Bolden.
Abdul-Wahid had six points and the lead swayed in favor of UWL for a spell. He hit a late three-pointer to put UWSP ahead 75-73 with 1:13 to go. Two free throws by UWL sent the game to overtime.
Bolden and Baumgartner had layups as the Pointers trailed early in overtime. Bolden had four more points to get UWSP within one in the final seconds. But a potential game-winner by Krohn was off target.
The Pointers travel to UW-River Falls on Wednesday (Jan. 15) for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
