UWSP Softball Season Ends in NCAA Tournament Regionals

ANGOLA, Ind. – A magnificent season by the UW-Stevens Point softball team (32-9) came to an end in the NCAA Tournament regionals with a 2-1 loss to Westminster (Pa.) (26-12) on Friday.
 
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) hit a double and drove in the only run of the game for the Pointers. Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community), Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had a hit each as well.
 
Freshman Pitcher Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) returned to form tossing 3.0 scoreless frames as the game remained knotted at 0-0 after three innings.
 
The Pointers got a two-out single in the top of the fourth by Baker. She stole second and scored on the double by Meyers as UWSP went ahead, 1-0.
 
The Titans got back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fourth. Two more hits in the frame gave WC a 2-1 lead.
 
Traxel singled with one out in the sixth. She stole second, but was stranded there as the inning ended.
 
Cibrario singled with two outs in the seventh. She was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the game.
 
Harwood struck out three in the start. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 3.0 innings with two strikeouts, her school-record 37th appearance of the season.
 
The Pointers end the season with 32 wins, the most since 2007. It was also the first NCAA Tournament appearance for UWSP since 2007. The Pointers stole 111 bases this season, a school record and tied for the third-most in a single season in WIAC history. Traxel led the team with 21 steals this year, setting the career program record with 58.
