WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (26-17) dropped both games on Friday and were eliminated from the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's). The Pointers came up short in game one, 10-6, against No. 7 UW-Whitewater (32-8). Then, UWSP was stymied by No. 16 UW-La Crosse (31-12) in an 8-1 loss in the elimination game.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had two hits in each game. He drove in three and scored three times. Olson hit two of UWSP's three home runs on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWW 10
UWW got on the board first with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning.
Olson hit a solo home run with one out in the fifth, UWSP's first hit of the game.
The Warhawks posted five runs in the fifth on four hits, two of which were home runs.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) hit a solo home run with two away in the sixth. The Warhawks added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-2.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) led off the seventh with a single. Olson homered again, a two-run shot. Two batters later,
Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) doubled.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) was hit by a pitch. With two away, a run scored on a wild pitch. A dropped fly ball gave UWSP another run, but UWSP could get no closer than 10-6.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 4.2 in the in start with two strikeouts.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) had one strikeout in relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 8
UWL put up three runs in the first of four hits. The Eagles added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put UWSP in a 7-0 hole. UWL tacked on another run in the seventh.
Martell broke up UWL's no-hit bid with a double to start the sixth. Boos was hit by a pitch and
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew a walk to load the bases. The Pointers left all three aboard with a run in the inning.
Olson doubled with one away in the seventh. Boos and Martell drew walks and again UWSP stranded the bases loaded without a run scoring.
Olson doubled to lead off the ninth. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout as UWSP avoided the shutout.
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 5.0 in the start with four strikeouts.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) pitched the final 3.0 frames with three strikeouts.
The Pointers will await a possible bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is on Monday (May 13) at 12:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
