OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 20 UW-Stevens Point softball team (26-4, 6-2) handed No. 19 UW-Oshkosh (28-2, 6-2) its first shutout of the season as the teams split a doubleheader on Wednesday. UWSP won game one, 3-0, before the Titans staged a late rally to beat the Pointers in game two, 3-2.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) tied the WIAC record with her 11th save of the year in the game one shutout.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) earned her team-leading 10th win in the shutout.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had two hits with an RBI and a runs scored in each game.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had three hits on the day and drove in two in game one.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit safely in both games. She scored both runs in game two.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) each had a two-hit game on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWO 0
The teams each had runners aboard in the first, third and fourth with Harwood escaping a bases-loaded jam to conserve the shutout in the fourth.
The Pointers struck first in the fifth. Klicker hit a two-out double. Roberts drew a walk to put two aboard. Traxel ripped a single down the left-field line to put UWSP in front, 1-0.
Klicker drew a one-out walk in the seventh. Roberts doubled as Klicker raced home for a 2-0 lead. Traxel followed with an RBI single to give UWSP the 3-0 advantage.
Harwood tossed 4.0 scoreless frames with five strikeouts. Zygowski pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWO 3
Roberts and Traxel hit consecutive singles to begin the fourth inning. Both stole a base to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Allie Meyer hit an RBI groundout to put UWSP up, 1-0.
The Titans finally got on the board with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) singled with one away in the fifth. Cibrario and Klicker followed with singles to load the bases. Roberts hit the fourth-straight single to tie the game at 2-2.
UWO turned three hits in the sixth into the eventual winning run.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) struck out one over 3.1 innings in the start. Zygowski tossed 2.1 with four strikeouts. Harwood recorded the final out via strikeout.
The Pointers return to action on Saturday (April 27) with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against UW-River Falls.
