WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – The No. 22 UW-Stevens Point softball team (23-3, 3-1) pulled out a sweep of UW-La Crosse (15-17, 1-5) in league action on Saturday. The Pointers won game one, 3-1, before securing the sweep with a 4-3 victory in game two.
Sophomore
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) set the single-season school record with her ninth save of the season in game one. Her nine saves leads the country. In game two, she earned the win.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit two home runs in game two, two of her three hits on the day. She drove in three in game two and scored three times on the day.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) hit safely in both games.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWL 1
Baker doubled to start the second inning.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) followed with a two-bagger of her own to put the Pointers ahead, 1-0.
Klicker hit a double with one out in the third. Two batters later, she scored on a single by Traxel to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) reached on a two-out error in the fourth. She stole second and scored on a single by
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) for a 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles turned two hits into a run in the sixth inning to thwart UWSP's shutout bid.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) notched her eighth win of the year with 6.0 strong innings in the start. She struck out six. Zygowski tossed a perfect seventh with one strikeout to earn the record-setting save.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWL 3
UWL turned a two-out walk in the first into a run on a double to take a 1-0 lead.
Klicker answered with a solo home run to left on the third pitch of the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.
The Eagles hit a solo home run in the third to regain the lead, 2-1.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on a throwing error to start the third. She moved to second on a sac bunt by
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper). Klicker then belted her second home run o the game, a two-run shot to center.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) followed with a solo home run to center, the 10
th pitch of her at-bat, for a 4-2 lead.
The Eagles got one run back in the sixth on two walks and one hit.
Zygowski earned the save with 2.1 innings in relief. Harwood earned the save with two strikeouts over the final 1.2 of the game.
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) went 3.0 in the start.
The Pointers host UW-Platteville in a rescheduled doubleheader on Monday (April 22) at 2:00 p.m.
