CHICAGO, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (0-5) squared off with the Illinois Institute of Technology (3-6) to a 20-6 loss.
IIT got the scoring started with a 4-0 run before being halted at the 6:28 mark of the first quarter with a solo Pointers' goal by
Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) to make the score 4-1. The Scarlett Hawks wrapped up the quarter with another unanswered scoring run growing their lead, 7-1.
The Scarlett Hawks scoring run carried into the second as they grew their lead to 9-1 within the first minute of regulation.
Allison Talir (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville Senior) put the run to an end at the 12:50 mark, extending her goal scoring streak to five games. Van Dyke added her fourth hat trick season, tacking on back-to-back goals to cut the IIT lead to six, down 10-4. IIT took a 14-4 lead heading into the half.
IIT came out of the half with a 4-0 run prior to UWSP's
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scoring a coast-to-coast goal with 2:25 remaining in the third, still down 18-5.
In the fourth, Leising tacked on her second goal on a free-position opportunity, making the score 19-6 halfway through the final quarter of play. UWSP was shutout for the remainder of regulation with a final score of 20-6.
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made the start in goal with one half of play and seven saves.
Ally Schmidli (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) saw her first action of the season in goal, playing the second half and recording her first career save.
The Pointers return home Wednesday (Apr. 3) to take on UW-River Falls in their first conference action of the season. Opening draw is set for 5:00 p.m.
