UWSP Softball Notches a Second-Straight Sweep in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-2) picked up two more wins to begin the Spring Games 4-0. The Pointers beat Amherst (1-5) by a 4-1 final before completing the sweep on the day with a 9-2 win over Bates (2-4).
 
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had two hits in each game to extend her hitting streak to six games. She had an RBI in each games and scored three runs on the day.
 
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) also extended her hitting streak to six with three hits on the day. She had two RBI against Amherst and scored three runs on the day.
 
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community), Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) all had multiple hits and multiple RBI on the day. Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had three hits on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Amherst 1
Klicker doubled to begin the UWSP first. Traxel drew a walk and Baker reached on an infield single to load the bases. But a line-out double play thwarted the threat.
 
Heckendorf and Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) had singles in the second, but again UWSP was unable to push home a run. In the fifth, the Pointers loaded the bases on a hit by Roberts and walks by Traxel and Baker. That rally too was quashed without a run scoring.
 
The Mammoths broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth with one run on two hits.
 
The Pointers immediately got back to work. Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth. Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) reached on an infield single to put two aboard. Then with two down, Klicker slashed a triple to right scoring two runs. Roberts followed with a single to give UWSP a 3-1 lead. After Roberts stole second, Traxel hit a single to push the advantage to 4-1.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) struck out 10 over 5.0 in the start. She scattered three hits and did not allow a run. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) tossed the final 2.0 to pick up her third win of the week. She struck out three.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 9, Bates 2
Klicker drew a walk to begin the game. With two away, she stole second and scored on a single by Baker. Baker stole second and scored on a single by Meyers. Heckendorf and Emma Stolzman (McHenry, Ill./McHenry Community) singled back-to-back to give UWSP a 3-0 lead.
 
Roberts started the third with a double. Traxel singled to plate a run.. Baker hit a double to add another run. Meyers followed with an RBI single. With two down, Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) drove in a run with a single for a 7-1 lead.
 
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) began the fourth with a single. Klicker and Roberts hit back-to-back doubles to put UWSP up 8-1.
 
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) had a pinch-hit two-out single in the sixth. Traxel followed with a triple and UWSP was ahead, 9-1.
 
Bates plated one run in the sixth on two hits to extend the game.
 
Elli Matzke (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) earned her team-leading fifth win of the season with 5.0 innings in the start. She struck out three. Van Beek pitched the final 2.0 with two strikeouts.
 
The Pointers face William Paterson at 1:30 p.m. ET and Tufts at 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday (March 21).
