NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (10-1) finished non-conference play with an 89-29 win over Mount Aloysius (6-4) to wrap up play at the Music City Classic.
Freshmen
Kate Vanden Berg (Appleton, Wis./North) and
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) posted season highs and reached double figures for the first time. Vanden Berg led all scorers with 13 and Gehri added 11 points.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was also in double figures with 12 points.
Thomson gave UWSP a 2-0 lead and
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) put the Pointers ahead for good to make it 4-2. Six different Pointers scored during a 15-0 run for a 17-2 lead. Gehri and
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) hit a combined three threes late and UWSP was up 25-4 after one.
Thomson and Krueger had four points each as the Pointers started the second with an 8-0 run. Vanden Berg had four points late and UWSP held a 46-16 advantage at halftime.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) hit a three during a 14-0 UWSP run to start the third. Gehri nailed her third three of the game late and the lead was 66-25 heading to the fourth.
Murphy and
Annika Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) each buried a three in the fourth quarter as the Pointers out-scored MAC, 23-4, in the period.
The Pointers will travel to UW-Platteville on Saturday (Jan. 4) to open lead play. Tip-off in Platteville is set for 3:00 p.m.
