STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-1) roared out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 79-32 win over Marian (3-5) in the first home game in over a month.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) led all scorers with 13 points, a career high on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. She also made her only three-point attempt.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had a double-double, her third in the last four games. She had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds, 10 on the offensive glass.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) scored the Pointers' first five points for a 5-3 lead early.
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) and
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) each drilled a three and the Pointers led 19-7 after one.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) had five points early in the second quarter. Truchon had four and Murphy hit another three as UWSP had a 39-20 lead at halftime.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) had six points and Truchon hit a triple as the Pointers opened the third quarter with a 12-1 run. Maki had a tip-in late and the Pointers were up 55-24 heading to the fourth.
Gawlitta had UWSP's first four points in the fourth. Truchon added four more by the midpoint of the quarter.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and
Brooke Bottcher (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) each hit a three late as the Pointers closed out the win.
The Pointers travel to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Classic on Dec. 29 and 30. UWSP will face Illinois College in the opening game on Dec. 29 at 3:00 p.m.
