Camarato, Gustafson Combine for Goal as Pointers Fall in WIAC Tournament

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (6-8-5) saw its season come to an end in a 2-1 loss to UW-River Falls (9-8-2) in the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) first round match on Tuesday.

The Pointers fell into a 2-0 deficit early as the visiting Falcons got on the board in the ninth, and again in the 16th minute.

In the 35th minute, UWSP nearly pulled one back. Off a free kick, Liliana Martinez (Portland, Ore./Rex Putnam) sent a shot towards goal that was saved off the line by a UWRF field player. Despite out-shooting the Falcons, 16-7, in the opening stanza, the Pointers trailed by two at the break.

In the opening minute of the second half, the Pointers earned a free kick about 35 yards out. Mara Gustafson (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) sent a line drive into the box. Jessica Camarato (DeForest, Wis./DeForest Area) got a deflection at the top of the six-yard box for the goal.

UWSP goalkeeper Erika Panella (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine) made a diving save through traffic in the 55th minute to keep the Pointers within a goal.

In the 82nd minute, Martinez nearly equalized, but her shot hit the post and stayed out.

UWRF goalkeeper Grace Zellmer made 12 saves to earn the win. Panella had five saves.

The Pointers' five seniors of Camarato, Madison Culli (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect), Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch), Gustafson and Savannah Reed (Waukegan, Ill./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) combined for 35 goals, 45 assists and two goalkeeper wins in their four seasons.
