STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-6, 0-4) fell to No. 9/14 UW-Oshkosh (5-2, 3-1) in league play on Saturday, 42-7.
Freshman quarterback
Zay Segner (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) led the UWSP offense and he found the end zone for the first time in his career. Segner rushed for a game-high 104 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. He also completed 11 passes for 162 yards.
Andru Miller (Plymouth, Wis./Plumouth) made a pair of catches for 87 yards.
Miles Gallagher (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had five catches for 45 yards.
Defensively,
Jack Luedtke (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth),
Joe Berens (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Paul Morris (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) had six tackles each to lead the Pointers.
Segner rushed for three first downs on the Pointers' opening drive. As the drive neared midfield, a penalty derailed the momentum and UWSP was forced to punt.
UWO went 74 yards in nine plays on the ensuing drive to put UWSP in a 7-0 hole. The titans scored two early touchdowns in the second quarter and UWSP trailed, 21-0.
Segner and Miller connected for 54 yards and UWSP was in UWO territory for the first time. A fourth-down conversion gave the Pointers first-and-goal. But on third down, an interception ended the drive.
The Titans got a touchdown on the final drive of the first half. UWO added another touchdown on the first play of the third quarter and scored again on its next possession to make it 42-0.
Late in the third quarter,
Reed Smith (Powell, Wyo./Powell) had back-to-back 7-yard carries. Segner ran for another first down and UWSP was near midfield heading to the fourth. Segner gained 19 yards on the first play of the final stanza. Two plays later, Smith gained 16 yards and another first down. Three plays later, Segner scampered for 15 yards and his first career touchdown.
Midway through the fourth quarter, UWSP began a drive at its own two. A UWO penalty kept the drive going and UWSP seized the momentum. Segner and Miller connected for 33 yards. Smith caught a pass for 15 more yards. Gallagher gained 16 on reception to set UWSP with first-and-goal. Three incompletions turned the ball over on downs.
The Pointers will host UW-Platteville on Saturday (Nov. 2) for Senior Day. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.
