Pointers’ Win Streak Snapped in League Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 25 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-1, 0-1) dropped an 82-53 conference opener to visiting No. 17/20 UW-Stout (11-1, 1-0) on Wednesday night.

Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was the lone Pointer in double figures with 11 points. She also led the team with six rebounds. Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added nine points and five boards.

The Blue Devils jumped out to a 10-0 lead halfway through the first quarter before Krueger got UWSP on the board with a three. Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had a layup late and the deficit was 17-5 after one.

Thomson hit a jumper to end an 8-0 run by Stout to begin the second. Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) drilled a three to give UWSP a bit of momentum. Hagen added five points to lead UWSP at the break with seven as the Pointers trailed 45-22.

Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) made a layup and Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) nailed a triple early in the third for UWSP. Following a Krueger layup, Gawlitta hit from behind the arc. Thomson drained a three among five points in the period. Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) had four points late, but UWSP couldn't close the gap.

Gawlitta and Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) each had a bucket from the field in the fourth. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) added a pair of free throws.

The Pointers face UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 6) at 3:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
