STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 25 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-1, 0-1) dropped an 82-53 conference opener to visiting No. 17/20 UW-Stout (11-1, 1-0) on Wednesday night.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was the lone Pointer in double figures with 11 points. She also led the team with six rebounds.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added nine points and five boards.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 10-0 lead halfway through the first quarter before Krueger got UWSP on the board with a three.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had a layup late and the deficit was 17-5 after one.
Thomson hit a jumper to end an 8-0 run by Stout to begin the second.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) drilled a three to give UWSP a bit of momentum. Hagen added five points to lead UWSP at the break with seven as the Pointers trailed 45-22.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) made a layup and
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) nailed a triple early in the third for UWSP. Following a Krueger layup, Gawlitta hit from behind the arc. Thomson drained a three among five points in the period.
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) had four points late, but UWSP couldn't close the gap.
Gawlitta and
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) each had a bucket from the field in the fourth.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) added a pair of free throws.
The Pointers face UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 6) at 3:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
