STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-5, 2-5) fell in the league's first half finale against UW-Platteville (11-7, 4-3) by a 68-58 final.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) tied for the game-high with 15 points.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) was also in double figures with 11, one shy of matching her career high.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) added eight points and led all players with 12 rebounds.
Kreuger and Hagen each had an early bucket and a pair of free throws by
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) gave UWSP a 6-5 edge. Slowik nailed her first three of the game for a 9-8 advantage.
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) made a layup, but a UWP three at the buzzer saw UWSP trail 16-12 after one.
Hagen scored UWSP's first three points of the second quarter, but the Pioneers started with a 9-1 run to push the deficit to 25-13.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) buried a pair of threes and the Pointers trailed 36-24 at the half.
Kreuger completed an and-one to begin the third. Slowik, Krueger and Campion each made a layup and a three in the final minute by Thomson made it 48-37 heading to the fourth.
A layup by Slowik and a three by Campion got UWSP within seven with 5:53 remaining. A Hagen layup and two free throws by Krueger got the Pointers to within 58-52 with 3:47 to go. Slowik hit another three in the final minute.
The Pointers begin the second half of conference play at home on Saturday (Jan. 27). Tip-off against UW-River Falls is slated for 3:00 p.m. in Berg Gym.
