ALBION, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-2) ended the non-conference schedule with a 30-7 loss at Albion (4-0) on Saturday.
UWSP quarterbacks
Jacob Leair (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) and
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) completed 15 passes for 156 yards. Smith had a late touchdown pass to
Jeremy Kobe (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet).
On the ground, UWSP totalled 85 yards with
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) leading the way with 36 yards.
Defensively, Tysen led the Pointers with eight tackles, 0.5 for loss. He also recovered a fumble and returned it 24 yards.
Cody Trowbridge (Milladore, Wis./Auburndale) forced a fumble and had six tackles.
Dakota Carriveau (Oconto Falls, Wis./Oconto Falls) also forced a fumble and
Gavino Lopez (Dorchester, Wis./Colby) made an inception for the second-straight game.
The host Britons took the opening kickoff and drove 78 yards on six plays to take a 7-0 lead.
UWSP's opening drive looked promising with Cashin gaining 11 yards on three carries to move the chains. Leair connected with Williams for 14 yards to move the Pointers into Albion territory. The drive stalled at the Albion 15 and UWSP's field goal attempt was no good.
It took the Britons six plays on the ensuing drive to find the end zone again as UWSP faced a 14-0 deficit. After a three-and-out by the Pointers, the Britons returned the punt 74 yards for a touchdown.
Leair found Gallagher for a 25-yard reception after a roughing the passer call against Albion on the next drive. UWSP again got into Albion territory with a drive sputtering at the 20. Another field goal attempt on the second play of the second quarter was no good.
Albion scored again later in the second quarter after recovering a fumble by the Pointers at the UWSP 36. Six plays later, the Britons pushed the lead to 27-0 after a missed extra point.
Just before halftime, Lopez made his second interception in as many games at the Pointers' own seven to thwart another Albion scoring threat.
Midway through the third quarter, the Britons put their final scoring drive together. After a 12-play drive, UWSP's defense held Albion to a field goal attempt and the deficit stood at 30-0.
The Pointers started the fourth quarter with Smith under center. He completed four passes on the drive, including a 14-yard strike to Kobe for the touchdown to cap the nine-play drive.
The Pointers return home to face UW-Eau Claire in the league opener on Saturday (Sept. 30). The 1:00 p.m. kickoff is the annual Pink Game for Charity.
