STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) belted a two-run home run in the first inning setting the tone as the No. 15 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (31-11) advanced to the NCAA Tournament Regional final with a 20-1 win over Webster (32-15). Comer later hit a grand slam and tied the program single-game record with eight RBI.
Comer had four hits on the day coming up a triple shy of a cycle. He scored four runs on the day.
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) also had four hits in the game. He homered, drove in three and scored three times.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) crushed two home runs among his three hits on the day. He had three RBI and scored twice.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning. Two batters later, Comer launched a two-run home run to left to put UWSP ahead 2-0 early.
The Gorloks got a run back in the fourth inning, but UWSP put the game virtually out of reach in the fifth.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) began the fifth with a double. Comer was hit by a pitch and Canterbury singled to plate the first run. Another run scored on a passed ball. After walks to
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) loaded the bases,
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) hit an RBI groundout to make it 5-1 with two down in the inning. The Pointers were far from finished in the inning.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and Boos drew walks to push home another run. Nelson doubled for the second time in the frame to plate two more. Comer doubled pushing home two more. Canterbury and Oliver then hit back-to-back home runs and the lead was 13-1 following the 11-run inning.
Finger walked with one out in the sixth. Van Ess was hit by a pitch. With two away, Nelson singled to load the bases for Comer. Comer crushed a grand slam to make it 17-1. After Canterbury was hit by a pitch, Oliver and Tomczak hit consecutive home runs for the 20-1 lead.
Both teams left the bases loaded without scoring in the seventh and neither team scored again in the game.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) was again solid in the start. He went 4.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Mason Weckler (Belvidere, Ill./North) tossed 2.0 scoreless frames with one strikeout.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton),
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) and
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) each pitched an inning in relief.
UWSP will face Webster in the Regional final on Sunday (May 21). Game one is slated to start at 11:00 a.m. and the Pointers need just one win on Sunday to advance to the Super Regional round.
