EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The No. 23 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (23-9, 13-5, scored 11 runs in each game of a doubleheader sweep at UW-Eau Claire (7-20, 1-15). The Pointers won, 11-3, in game one and completed the sweep in seven innings in game two, 11-1. It was the 10th time in the last 15 games UWSP has scored double-digit runs.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) tied a career high with five RBI in game one. He didn't have a run batted in during game two, but all eight of the other starters did.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had three RBI each on the day.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers),
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) had two RBI each in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 11, UWEC 3
The Blugolds took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run.
The Pointers took control in the third. Van Ess drew a leadoff walk,
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) doubled and
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Boos drove in his first of the game with a walk. Nelson reached on an infield single to drive in another. Comer hit a sac fly. Oliver drew a walk to load the bases again.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) followed with a sac fly for a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth, Van Ess and Canterbury hit consecutive singles to start the frame. Two batters later, Boos singled to plate one. Nelson followed with an RBI single to up the lead to 6-1.
Tomczak singled, Homolka was hit by a pitch and Canterbury singled to load the bases with one out in the fifth.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) drew a walk to push in a run. Boos hit a double plating two runs and it was 9-1.
Nelson was hit by a pitch to start the eighth. He stole second and scored on a Comer single for a 10-3 lead.
Van Ess drew a walk to begin the ninth. A one-out error put two aboard. Boos doubled to drive in another for an 11-3 lead.
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 7.0 innings in the start. He struck out five.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) fanned one in 2.0 frames of relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 11, UWEC 1 (7 inn.)
Boos singled to start game two. Walks by Comer and Canterbury loaded the bases with one out. Oliver was hit by a pitch to give UWSP the 1-0 lead early.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) singled to begin the second. Two batters later, Boos singled and a run came in on an error to put UWSP ahead, 2-0.
Boos drew a walk to lead off the fourth. Nelson and Comer hit back-to-back singles to push home a run. Canterbury walked to load the bases. Oliver hit a sac fly. Van Ess drove in two with a double. Homolka singled to drive in another.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) continued to rally with a two-out triple for an 8-0 lead.
Nelson singled and stole second to start the fifth. Two batters later, Canterbury singled to drive him home. Oliver and Van Ess hit consecutive singles to push home another. Homolka was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Finger hit a sac fly to make it 11-1.
Mason Weckler (Belvidere, Ill./North) earned his fourth win of the season with 6.1 innings of work in the start. He fanned six.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) tossed the final 0.2 frames with one strikeout
The Pointers and Blugolds close out the season series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader in Eau Claire on Sunday (April 30).
