ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 18 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (10-6) scored seven times in the fourth inning, but host Washington University (16-7) rallied back for a 10-9 win over the Pointers.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two hits and drove in two, both in the seven-run fourth. He scored twice.
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) also had a pair of runs driven in and he scored in the big fourth inning.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) had a pair of hits and drew two walks. He had one RBI and two runs scored.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) had two hits and a walk with a RBI and a runs scored.
Nelson drew a one-out walk in the top of the first. Comer singled with Nelson put out on the play.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) singled to put two on base. Canterbury then hit the third-straight single to put UWSP in front, 1-0.
Oliver led off the second with a walk. Two batters later,
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) drew a base on balls.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) singled to center to plate Oliver as UWSP went ahead, 2-0.
WashU put up four runs in the second on two hits and a UWSP error. The Bears added two more in the third to put UWSP behind 6-2.
The Pointers didn't waver. Oliver hit a single to begin the fourth. Matson also singled and an error loaded the bases for the Pointers. Nelson singled to score the first run. Comer doubled to drive in two. Tomczak singled to plate another and tie the game at 6-6. Canterbury put UWSP ahead again with an RBI fielder's choice. A wild pitch allowed another run to score. Oliver singled for the second time in the inning to drive in another run for a 9-6 lead.
WashU got a run in the fifth on two hits and an error. The Bears added another tally in the sixth.
UWSP held the one-run lead until the eighth. WashU plated two runs on three hits in the eighth to pull ahead 10-9. The Pointers were retired in order in the ninth.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out two in the start.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) also had two strikeouts.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) and
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) had a strikeout each in relief.
The Pointers head to La Crosse for a four-game league series beginning on Friday (April 7) with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
