STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (9-3-0, 6-1-0) finished the weekend series with a 2-0 win over No. 8 UW-Eau Claire (8-4-1, 4-3-0). UWSP took all three games UWEC this season, picking up eight points to secure the top spot in the league heading into the holiday break.
The teams skated to a scoreless tie through the first period. UWSP out-shot the Blugolds, 9-4, in the first.
The same occurred in the second period as the Pointers held the shot advantage, 18-15, heading to the third.
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) broke the scoreless tie at the 3:25 mark of the third period. He took a feed from
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.) and ripped a shot into the net from the slot for a 1-0 lead.
Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn.) also had an assist on the play.
The lead remained 1-0 until the final minute of regulation.
Cody Moline (North Branch, Minn.) fired a shot into the empty net with 52.8 seconds left to close the scoring.
Brett Humberstone (Kingston, Ont.), who blocked eight shots in the win, added an assist on the play.
UWSP goaltender
Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) stopped all 36 shots he faced, including 21 in the third period, for his second shutout of the season. His 36 saves were a career high. UWEC goaltender Max Gutjahr had 22 saves.
The Pointers return to play on Jan. 5 at Hamline. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul.
