MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team posted a season-high 87 points and improved to 6-0 with an 87-68 win at North Central (3-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) posted a season-best and game-high 20 points.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) were also in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively. Gawlitta and Thomson each had a team-high seven rebounds.
Freshman
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) scored a season-high nine points.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) also just missed double digits with nine points each.
Gawlitta had four early points as UWSP got off to a 10-4 advantage early in the first. Loftus and Krueger had four points each late and the lead was 22-20 after one.
Thomson scored the first four points of the second quarter as part of a 6-2 run.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) scored four points late and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) added two free throws in the final minute and UWSP led 42-33 at the half.
Pfiefer nailed a three and scored eight points to begin the third. Campion and Loftus each buried a three as the Pointers held a double-digit lead the entire quarter.
Thomson, Pfeifer and Gawlitta combined for the first 13 points of the fourth quarter for UWSP as a 13-0 run pushed the lead to 76-51.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) made her first collegiate bucket and
Emma Van Order (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) made a pair of free throws for her first collegiate points late in the win.
The Pointers return home to face Benedictine in non-conference action on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Tip-off on Shirley Egner Court in Berg Gym is set for 7:00 p.m. All fans in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in the halftime 'Minute to Win it" half-court shootout to win up to $500.
