STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (5-4) held No. 2 Calvin (9-0) to its lowest margin of victory on the season as UWSP fell, 81-70, on Monday night.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Pointers in scoring with 20 points, fourth game this season with at least 20 points.
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) added a career-high 14 points.
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) was also in double-digits with 10.
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West),
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) each made an early bucket, but the Knights made nine of their first 11 field goals to open a 21-8 lead. Gillie hit back-to-back jumpers and Bolden drilled a three to get UWSP within 23-15 midway through the half.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) threw down a dunk on the fast break and Butler nailed two threes in 10-2 run as the Pointers got within two at 27-25. Butler added another bucket, but Calvin ended the half on a 15-4 burst.
Abdul-Wahid made back-to-back field goals and Butler drained another three as UWSP opened the second half on a 7-1 run. Calvin rebuilt the lead to 16 before Bolden hit a three. Gillie and Bolden combined for four points as the Pointers cut the deficit to single digits halfway to the finish.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) buried a three and scored five straight as the Pointers chipped away at a 19-point deficit with 4:36 to go. Butler and Krohn each made three-pointers late as UWSP got within nine late.
The Pointers continue the homestand on Dec. 28 with a 7:00 p.m. as MSOE comes to Stevens Point for a game during the Sentry Classic.
