STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-0) needed a 15-0 run at the end of the game to shake a pesky Milwaukee School of Engineering (6-2) squad for a 52-43 win.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led all scorers with 17 points. She narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added nine points and
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had eight off the bench.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) nailed a three and Gawlitta added three points as the teams battled to a 6-6 tie. Hagen and
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) extended the Pointers' run to 7-0 with a bucket each. The Raiders scored the final five points as UWSP trailed 11-10 after one.
Gawlitta and Thomson combined for the first 10 UWSP points of the second as UWSP stayed within one at 21-20.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) hit a three late and the team went to the break tied at 26-26.
Thomson, Pfeifer and Gawlitta each hit from the field as UWSP used a 6-0 run to move ahead, 32-29. Hagen scored a layup, but a three at the buzzer by MSOE put UWSP behind, 37-35, heading to the fourth.
After the Raiders scored six of the first eight points of the quarter, Thomson completed an and-one to spark the massive game-ending run. Kreuger and Hagen hit from the floor and Thomson made all four free throws as the Pointers held MSOE scoreless over the final 5:19 of the game.
UWSP travels to St. Thomas for an exhibition game on Saturday (Dec. 16) at 3:00 p.m. The Pointers return to regular season play at home on Thursday (Dec. 21) with a 2:00 p.m. against Lawrence. It'll be faculty/staff appreciation day and all UWSP faculty/staff will be admitted free and get a bag of popcorn with their ID.
