STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (1-0) led from the onset in a 78-63 win over Lawrence (0-2) in the home opener on Saturday.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) scored a game-high 21 points off the bench. He grabbed 10 rebounds to post a double-double in his UWSP debut.
Fellow newcomers
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) were also in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) dished a game-best nine assists. He added nine points.
Butler buried a three to break a 4-4 tie as UWSP took the lead for good. Miron hit a pair of triples and Butler sunk another from behind the arc as the Pointers opened up a 21-6 lead.
AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) nailed a pair of three and Abdul-Wahid poured in 10 as UWSP led 43-27 at the half.
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and Butler each made a three to open the second half. Miron scored four points as the lead grew to 20.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) scored five-straight for the Pointers to push the advantage to 65-40. Abdul-Wahid added nine down the stretch as UWSP closed out the win.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota on Wednesday (Nov. 15) for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff at St. Olaf.
