STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (19-6) split a pair of matches against ranked opponents at Saturday's Papa John's Invite. The Pointers fell, 3-0, to No. 24 Cornell (16-6) before a 3-0 sweep of No. 18 North Park.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) led all players in kills in both matches with 10 against CC and 11 versus NPU. She added a match-best 14 digs versus the Vikings for her 17th double-double of the season.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) was in double figures with a match-high 14 digs against the Rams and 13 more against North Park.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) led all players in assists in both matches with 21 and 28 on the day.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) was named to the all-tournament team.
UWSP 0, Cornell 3 (23-25, 14-25, 16-25)
Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) had a kill early as UWSP led 6-2 in the first. A Kopp kill was all that interrupted a 10-1 run by the Rams.
Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) each had an ace in a 9-1 run as UWSP was up 17-15.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and Mosinski each had a kill late as UWSP thwarted three set points before CC closed out the win.
Shaw had two early kills as UWSP was in front 5-3 in the second. Kopp added three-straight kills to get the Pointers within 11-10. But a 10- run by the Ram swung the second set to the visitors.
Kopp had a pair of kills as UWSP played from behind from the onset of the third set.
Jadyn Clarner (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) served an ace, but even a 7-2 run only got UWSP within 15-14. A block by Kopp to make it 18-16 was followed by a 7-0 run as CC finished the sweep.
UWSP 3, NPU 0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-11)
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had two kills as UWSP trailed 4-2 early in the first set. Kopp added three kills in a 8-1 run as UWSP went ahead 13-9. Thomka had a block and two kills in a 6-2 burst as UWSP led 20-13. Mosinski had two as UWSP closed out the first set.
Kopp and Thomka combined for six kills and a block as a 9-1 spurt saw the Pointers doubled up the Vikings, 20-10, in the second. Salettel and Mosinski had a kill each and combined on a block as UWSP took the second set.
Zeller, Trieloff and Erlandson each had an ace as the Pointers burst ahead 18-7 in the third. Michalske and
Erin Gillen (Richfield, Wis./Slinger) each added an ace last as the Pointers cruised to the third set win and the sweep.
The Pointers will face UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Oct. 25) at 7:00 p.m. in the final home regular season match of the year.
