STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (10-10, 3-6) avenged an early-season defeat with a 69-55 home victory over UW-Stout (4-14, 1-8) on Wednesday night.
AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) led the Pointers in scoring with 16 points.
Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 14 with
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) also in double figures with 10 points each.
Makinen and Mootz each buried early threes as UWSP jumped in front 6-2. Buchanan got in on the long-range shooting with two made triples, but the back-and-forth game was tied at 16-16 midway through the first half.
Landon VanCalster (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) had five points off the bench as UWSP built an eight-point advantage. Makinen had a late layup and the Pointers led at the break, 36-27.
UWSP's double-figure scorers accounted for the first 13 points as the Pointers began the second half on a 15-5 run.
Luke Warden (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) had a pair of layups down the stretch and the Pointers made 12-of-14 free throws over the final eight minutes to secure the win.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 1). Tip-off against the Warhawks is set for 7:00 p.m.
