STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (8-8-1) closed out a three-game homestand with a 3-1 win over visiting Marian (4-10-1) on Tuesday night.
Junior
Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) and freshman
Maddie Andrle (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) posted two points each in the win and accounted for all three goals.
After a scoreless first period, Andrle broke the 0-0 tie at 6:58 of the second period. Her second goal in as many games was assisted on by Berthiaume.
At 11:45 of the second period, Berthiaume scored her first goal of the season, the eventual game-winner.
Molly Millar (Anchorage, Alaska/East) and
Josie Bender (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) provided the helpers to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Marian got on the board at 1:38 of the third period on a breakaway that trickled through UWSP goaltender
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) to make it a one-goal game.
The Pointers earned their first power play of the game late in the third and took advantage. Andrle recorded her second goal of the game, tipping in a shot from
Maike Zipp (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac).
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) also had an assist on the power-play goal.
Schultz made 20 saves in the win, the 29th of her career to claim sole possession of fifth in school history. Marian goaltender Abby Okon made 44 saves.
The Pointers travel to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 21) to begin a three-game series against the Blugolds. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
