STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) racked up her first career double-double as the No. 12 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (11-2) defeated St. Olaf (5-7) in four sets at the Pointers Invitational on Friday.
Meyer had a career-best 14 kills and 11 digs for her first collegiate double-double. She added three blocks, two aces and an assist.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) also had a double-double each. Kopp powered down 18 kills and had 14 digs. Michalske had 39 assists, equaling the Oles' team total, and added 11 digs. Kopp posted a match-high five aces.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led the Pointers with 19 digs.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had six blocks to go with eight kills.
Kopp served up three of her aces in a 7-0 run as UWSP gained control of the first set early, 8-2.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) added an ace of her own to go with a kill as the lead extended to 16-5 behind another 7-0 burst. Kopp added four kills down the stretch as UWSP secured the first set, 25-16.
Meyer and Larson had consecutive kills to put UWSP ahead 5-2 early in the second set. Runs of 6-0 and 7-0 by the Oles put the visitors ahead and two late kills by Meyer weren't enough as UWSP dropped the set, 25-19.
Larson served up another ace and Kopp had three early kills as UWSP went in front 10- in the third. Meyer served up consecutive aces as the Pointers gained a 14-8 advantage. After the Oles got within 17-16, Mosinski had two kills and block to give UWSP the set, 25-22.
Kopp again had two early aces as UWSP took a 5-2 lead in the fourth. She had four kills and Michalske served up three-straight aces for a 17-7 advantage. Meyer had three kills down the stretch, including the match-clincher, as UWSP finished the win with a 25-12 victory.
The Pointers will play twice on Saturday (Sept. 24) in the Pointers Invitational. UWSP faces Carthage at 12:00 p.m. and Concordia (Wis.) at 2:00 p.m.
