DUBUQUE, Iowa – The No. 21 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (10-1) got double-double from
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) in both matches as UWSP knocked off No. 8 Gustavus Adolphus (7-2) in four sets before winning in straight sets over host Loras (3-6) at the Loras Invitational on Friday.
Kopp led all players in kills in both matches with 16 versus GAC and 13 more against Loras. She added a season-high 18 digs versus the Gusties and a game-high 13 against the Duhawks.
Michalske had a game-high 41 assists against GAC with 11 digs. She again led all players with 28 assists versus Loras with 10 more digs.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) was in double figures with 11 and 10 kills on the day.
Emma Peterson (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) led all players with 25 digs in the win over GAC.
UWSP 3, GAC 1 (26-24, 15-25, 25-16, 25-16)
A seesaw first set saw the teams lobby back and forth for the lead. Kills by
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Kopp as part of a 3-0 run gave UWSP a 12-9 advantage. Kopp and Mosinski posted back-to-back kills to up the lead to 15-11. A pair of Kopp kills and a Michalske ace put UWSP in front 23-17. Another kill by Kopp gave the Pointers set point, but a 5-0 run by the Gusties tied the set at 24-24. UWSP won the set with the final two points including a kill by
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central).
Two kills by Larson and another by Mosinski gave UWSP a tenuous 4-3 lead. The Pointers regained the lead on a 3-0 run to go up 10-9. A kill by
Megan Schroder (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) tied the set at 15-15, but GAC reeled off the final 10 points to tie the match at a set apiece.
Five kills by UWSP hitters gave the Pointers a 6-1 lead out of the gate in the third set. After the Gusties pulled even at 10-10, UWSP put up four straight and shortly followed with a 5-0 spurt for a 20-12 lead. A
Kelsie Belfiori (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) ace gave UWSP set point and Kopp closed the set win with a kill.
UWSP fell behind early in the fourth set. Aces by Belfiori and Mosinski pulled UWSP within 10-9. The Pointers reeled off five straight to gain a 16-12 lead.
Melanie Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson) powered down three late kills and a block as wrapped up the match with a 7-2 run.
UWSP 3, Loras 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-13)
Kopp had a kill and an ace to sandwich a 5-0 run early in the first set. Laron knocked down a kill and Peterson had an ace as UWSP went up 8-3. Mosinski added two kills and a block in a 5-0 run as UWSP took a 20-10 lead.
Mady Hanse (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) and Paukner each had a kill late to secure the set win.
Michalske served up an early ace and Kopp added two kills as UWSP jumped ahead 6-0. Another 6-0 run with
Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) adding her second block of the set gave UWSP a 13-6 lead. UWSP used a 6-2 run late to set up set point and held on for the set win.
Kopp had a kill and an ace in a 5-0 run to give UWSP lead early in the third set. Back-to-back blocks by Mosinski and Meyer helped UWSP gain a 17-9 lead. Mosinski had a pair of kills late as UWSP completed the straight-set sweep.
UWSP returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 21) at UW-Whitewater with a matchup of ranked conference foes at 7:00 p.m.
