WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 12 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (40-8) is headed to its sixth College World Series after finishing a Super Regional Round sweep of No. 9 UW-Whitewater (36-11) by an 11-7 final on Saturday.
Senior
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) recorded his first career three-home game with two solo shots and a two-run blast. Shortstop
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) had the decisive blow, though, a grand slam in the eighth inning. Both had four RBI on the day.
Eight of UWSP's nine hitters had a hit in the game. Six Pointers had multi-hit games.
The Pointers took the lead in the second sparked by a leadoff triple to center by
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage). He scored on a single up the middle by
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North). After a Matson single,
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit a two-out RBI single to make it 2-0.
Luedtke crushed the first pitch of the third inning over the right-center fence for a 3-0 advantage. After UWW got a run back in the fourth, it was Luedtke leading off again with a solo home run to put UWSP back up by three.
The Warhawks put up two runs in the fifth and it was Luedtke again for the Pointers.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) singled with one down in the sixth Luedke followed with his third blast of the game, this time to left field for a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, UWW tied the game on three hits, including a game-tying three-run home run.
The Pointers bounced right back. Comer walked to begin the eighth and was replaced at first on a fielder's choice. Boos was hit by a pitch and Henwood singled to load the bases.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) was hit by a pitch to push the go-ahead run home. Matson stepped up and belted a grand slam to left-center for an 11-6 lead.
The Warhawks got one back in the eighth and loaded the bases in the ninth, but
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) recorded the 11th strikeout of the game for UWSP pitching to seal the win.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) started and went 5.0 with seven strikeouts.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) pitched a scoreless inning and
Marcus Jaworski (Iola, Wis./Iola-Scandinavia) earned the win with 1.0 and a strikeout. Syvertson picked up the save with 1.1 frames and three strikeouts.
UWSP reaches the 40-win plateau for the second time in program history. The Pointers went 41-10 in 2013, the last appearance in the College World Series. The Pointers begin the College World Series on Friday (June 3) with game time and opponent to be determined.
