WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (32-7) blasted seven home runs and posted the second-most run in WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) history in an 18-7 run-rule victory over UW-La Crosse (23-17).
All nine batters in the UWSP lineup had a hit in the game with leadoff hitter
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) getting four base hits. He was a home run shy of the cycle with three RBI and three runs scored.
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) slugged his 17th home run of the season, one shy of tying the single-season school record. It was a three-run shot. He also drew three walks and UWSP drew six on the day to set the team single season record in the category.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) belted two home runs on the day and had four hits. He scored four times and had two RBI.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville),
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls),
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) also hit home runs in the game.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had his longest outing of the year with 7.1 innings in the start. He struck out eight to pick up the victory.
UWSP pulled in front in the second inning as Luedtke led off with a solo home run.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) singled and with two outs, Matson hit a two-run home run. Baumann continued the inning with a triple. After a Simmons walk,
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) grounded into a fielder's choice and an errant throw gave UWSP a 4-0 lead.
Luedtke led off the third with a single. With two away, Finger hit a single to put two on. Matson drove in another run with a base hit. Baumann followed with an RBI double to make it 6-0.
The Eagles cut the lead in half in the fourth, but the Pointers kept piling on runs in the bottom of the frame. Comer led off with a single. After a pair of flyouts, Boos drilled a two-run home run. Finger singled and Matson was hit by a pitch. Baumann doubled again to drive in two more. After another Simmons walk, Nelson singled to push home a run for an 11-3 lead.
Finger homered in the fifth and the score remained 12-3 until the eighth. UWL got four runs on a grand slam.
The Pointers got back on the board in the bottom of the inning in a big way. Finger led off with his second home run of the game. Matson was hit with a pitch again and Baumann drew a walk. Simmons then launched a three-run home run. Nelson followed with a double and Comer walked-off with a two-run shot and the 18-7 win in eight innings.
The Pointers will play again on Friday (May 13) at 10:00 a.m. against UW-Oshkosh.
