Candre Ties Doubles Mark as Pointers Split Regular Season Finale

MADISON, Wis. – Senior Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) tied the program record for doubles with her 44th career double in her final regular season at-bat as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (19-17, 4-10) split with UW-River Falls (16-13, 5-7) on Sunday in Madison. UWSP recorded its third-straight shutout in game one, 3-0, before falling in the finale, 10-5. The last time the Pointers had three-consecutive shutouts was in March 2008.

Candre went 3-for-3 in game two with two singles and the program-record tying double. She was intentionally walked in her final plate appearance.

Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek), Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) and Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) all had three hits on the day. Tkach and Traxel each had an RBI and Meyers scored a run.

Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWRF 0
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) singled to start the bottom of the first. Candre drew a walk and both runners moved up on a sac bunt. Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) then ripped a single to center as UWSP took a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Myers singled to lead off. With two outs, pinch runner Jayden Prondzinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) scored from first on a double by Traxel as UWSP went up 2-0.

Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) led off the sixth with a single. She moved up on a sac bunt and a groundout. Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) then singled to left to make it 3-0.

That's all Tkach needed. She worked around four walks and gave up just one hit in the shutout win. She struck out five.

Game 2 – UWSP 5, UWRF 10
UWSP's shutout streak came to an end in the top of the first. The Falcons turned two walks and a sac fly into a run without the benefit of a hit.

UWRF plated five runs in the second on four hits and two more walks for a 6-0 lead.

The Pointers broke through in the third. Candre singled as did Traxel. Then with two away, a UWRF miscue got the Pointers a run. The Falcons got the run back in the fourth to make it 7-1.

Tkach hit a one-out single down the rightfield line. She was replaced at first on a fielder's choice. Meyers followed with a double to put two in scoring position. Klicker tripled to right-center and scored on an overthrow at third to get UWSP within 7-4.

In the fifth, Lawrence singled up the middle with one down. Tkach hit a two-out double to plate Lawrence for a 7-5 score.

The Falcons squashed the comeback attempt with three runs in the sixth on four hits. UWSP got two on the sixth and another in the seventh, but were unable to complete the comeback.

With the game two loss, the Pointers were mathematically eliminated from contention for the WIAC Tournament.

Candre completes her stellar career with a .396 batting average, third-best in program history. She tied Rebekah Bauer for the most career doubles. Candre also finished fourth in school history with 34 stolen bases and 52 bases on balls.
