STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 20 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (14-3, 5-2) rallied twice to force extra innings of game two of its home opener before the game was halted due to darkness. UWSP dropped the opening game to UW-La Crosse (12-6, 7-2) by a 12-6 final before rallying to tie game two, 14-14, after nine innings. UWSP and UWL will complete game two on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Payton nelson and
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) had three RBI apiece in game two.
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) drove in three on the day with
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) driving in two each.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWL 12
The Pointers found themselves in a 5-0 hole after a half inning. UWL tacked on single runs in the third and the fourth to lead 7-0.
Nelson and
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) drew walks in the fourth and Luedtke singled to load the bases.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) drove in a run on a groundout. Boos followed with a two-RBI single as UWSP got within 7-3.
UWSP got an unearned run in the fifth before UWL put up three in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) tripled to begin the ninth. He scored on a single by Simmons. Comer singled with one away to plate another to complete the scoring.
Game 2 – UWSP 14, UWL 14 (halted after 9)
UWSP again fell behind 5-0 after a half inning in game two. This time, UWSP battled back right away.
Baumann walked to lead off the frame and Simmons reached on an error. A wild pitch plated one run and Comer singled to put two aboard. Luedtke blasted a three-run home run to right to get UWSP within 5-4.
Baumann sparked a two-out rally in the second with a single. Simmons walked and Nelson tied the game with a single. Comer, Henwood and Luedtke drew consecutive walks with three runs scoring on a plethora of wild pitches in the inning.
After UWL tied the game in the third, the Pointers regained the lead in the bottom of the stanza. Boos drew a leadoff walk. Another wild pitch and an error allowed UWSP to plate the go-ahead run.
UWL pulled even in the fifth and again UWSP went in front in the bottom of the inning.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) doubled to begin the frame.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) singled and Simmons drove in a run with a two-out single. Nelson plated two on a single and Comer added another with an RBI single for a 13-9 lead.
The Eagles got one in the seventh and put up four runs in the ninth to take a 14-13 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Simmons led off with a solo home run off the scoreboard in right-center to tie the game. Following the inning, the game was halted due to darkness.
The Pointers will complete game two on Sunday (April 10) beginning at 11:00 a.m. UWSP and UWL will then close out the series with two nine inning games afterwards.
