Pointers Amass 39 Runs in Sweep of Finlandia

MAUSTON, Wis. – The No. 25 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (11-2, 3-1) exploded for 39 run in a doubleheader sweep of Finlandia (3-13, 0-6) on Sunday. UWSP won game one, 17-0, and completed the sweep in game two, 22-1, both in seven innings.
 
UWSP belted six home runs on the day, Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) clubbing one in each game. Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit his first collegiate long ball. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) also homered.
 
Simmons and Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) led the way with six RBI each. Luedtke added five with Tomczak and Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) contributing four each.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 17, Finlandia 0 (7)
Comer put the Pointers on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out, two-run homer to left.
 
UWSP added on four runs in the second on just one hit, an RBI double by Matson. Two Lions' miscues and a wild pitch contributed to the rally.
 
Simmons and Luedtke each homered in the fifth as the Pointers tallied seven runs on three hits. Four walks and a hit batter also played into the big rally.
 
In the fifth, UWSP tacked on four runs on two hits. Matson drove in two with a single. Luedtke and Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) also had an RBI in the inning.
 
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) struck out a career-high nine as he went 6.0 shutout frames to improve to 4-0. Alex Fortier (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) struck out two in a scoreless inning in his Pointers' debut.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 22, Finlandia 1 (7)
Simmons hit his 15th career triple to drive in the first run of the game in the first inning. He then scored on a sac fly by Nelson. The Lions got on the board for their only run of the day on a walk, wild pitch and a base hit in the second.
 
Tomczak launched his first career home run with one aboard in the bottom of the second. Simmons ripped his second home run of the day to right in the inning as UWSP scored 10 runs on eight hits and two walks.
 
Luedtke, Tomczak, Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and Matson had RBI in the third as UWSP increased the lead to 17-1.  Nelson belted a two-run home run in the fourth to make it 19-1.
 
The Pointers wore it in the sixth as three-straight hit batters loaded the bases. A sac fly and a two-run single by Matson completed the scoring.
 
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) went 5.0 in the start to get the win He struck out eight. Jacob Borchert (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin) and James Schutte (New Richmond, Wis./New Richmond) each pitched an inning in their UWSP debuts. Borchert had one strikeout and Schutte struck out two.
 
The Pointers and Lions close out the series on Monday (April 4) with a twin bill in Mauston beginning at 12:00 p.m.
