OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (16-16, 1-9) battled No. 19 UW-Oshkosh (22-6, 8-2) to a pair of one-run games on Wednesday. UWSP fell in the opener, 3-2, before battling back from a 6-0 deficit to fall by a final of 6-5 in game two.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had two hits in each game, her first career back-to-back multi-hit games. She scored a run in game two.
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville),
Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) had two hits each on the day. Tkach had a run scored and an RBI. Lawrence scored a run in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWO 3
Van Beek reached on an error to start the second inning. With two away, Tkach singled and
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) followed with an RBI double as UWSP took a 1-0 lead.
Lawrence doubled to begin the fourth inning. She moved to third on a sac bunt by
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township). Tkach sent a sac fly to center as UWSP went up 2-0.
The lead held until the seventh. The Titans produced three runs on three hits to walk-off with the game one win.
Tkach and Van Beek combined for four strikeouts in the circle.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, UWO 6
UWO put up five runs in the first inning on three hits, four walks and a UWSP miscue. The Titans made it 6-0 in the second.
Meyers and Tkach hit consecutive singles in the third as UWSP started a comeback attempt. Both moved up on a groundout.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) hit a single to push one run home. Van Beek drove in two more with a single to right-center as UWSP cut the lead in half, 6-3.
Geiyer drew a leadoff walk in the fourth. She moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single by Meyers. A passed ball allowed Geiyer to score making it 6-4.
In the fifth, Lawrence walked with two down. She moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Geiyer single to get UWSP within a run.
Van Beek singled in the seventh, but the tying run remained at first as the game ended.
The Pointers return home for the final four games of the regular season. UWSP will face UW-Stout on Friday (April 29) in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. at McCarty Memorial Field.
