STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (20-4, 11-3) may not have been the home team on the scoreboard, but the Pointers belted eight home runs in the friendly confines of Zimmermann Field in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout (15-11, 10-6) to claim the series. UWSP won the opening game, 11-5, before clubbing six long balls in a 16-6 game two win.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two of UWSP's home runs with four hits, four RBI and three runs scored on the day.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) also hit a long ball among his four hits on the day. He had three RBI and scored five times.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) also collected four hits with three runs scored and an RBI.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) had three hits, including his first home run as a Pointer.
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit his team-leading ninth home run.
Game 1 – UWSP 11, Stout 5
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) was hit by a pitch to begin the third inning. Two batters later, Matson launched his first UWSP homer to left and a 2-0 lead.
The Pointers got two more runs in the fourth.
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) singled in the frame and scored on a wild pitch.
After the Blue Devils got two in the fourth, UWSP put another two-spot on the board in the fifth. Nelson singled and scored in the inning as did
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) for a 6-2 lead.
Baumann singled up the middle to start the sixth. Simmons drew a walk and Nelson launched a three-run homer to make it 9-3.
The Pointers made it five-straight multi-run innings in the seventh. Henwood drew a walk to begin the frame. He scored on a sac fly by Matson. Boos reached on an error in the inning and scored on a wild pitch.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) started and struck out three in 4.2 innings.
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) also recorded three strikeouts in 1.1 frames.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) went the final 3.0 with four strikeouts for his first career save.
Game 2 – UWSP 16, Stout 6
After a Simmons walk with one out in the first, UWSP got three straight singles, capped by a two-RBI hit by Luedtke for a 2-0 lead.
Stout answered with two in its half of the first and the game remained knotted at 2-2 until the third. Simmons reached on a dropped fly ball to start the inning. Nelson and Comer were hit by pitches to load the bases. Luedtke drove in a run on a groundout for a 3-2 edge.
The Blue Devils again answered with a run in the bottom of the third.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) led off the fourth with a solo home run to put UWSP back in front.
Comer and Henwood each hit solo shots in the fifth as UWSP upped the lead to 6-3. In the sixth, Simmons hit a two-run home run and Luedtke did as well as the Pointers pushed the lead to 11-4.
Nelson singlehandedly produced a run in the seventh. He hit a two-out single, stole second, moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch.
In the ninth, the Pointers kept piling on runs. Simmons drove in one with a sac fly. Later in the frame, Comer hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out five in the start going 4-plus innings.
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) had three strikeouts in 2.0 hitless frames to pick up the win.
UWSP will host UW-Eau Claire for a four-game weekend series beginning on Saturday (April 23). First pitch at Zimmermann Field is set for 12;00 p.m.
