MONTGOMERY, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (13-7) suffered it first doubleheader sweep of the season as host Aurora (14-2) won both games on Friday by 7-2 and 10-3 finals.
Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) was the lone UWSP batter with a hit in each game. Freshmen
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) and
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) each hit their first career home runs for the Pointers in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, Aurora 7
The Spartans put up a run in the first and two more in the third before
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) got UWSP's first hit to begin the fourth.
After Aurora added another run in the fifth,
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) hit a one-out single in the sixth. Candre drew a walk and with two away,
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) hit a two-run double.
The Spartans responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. UWSP got a leadoff double by Lawrence in the seventh. Two batters later,
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) singled, but both were stranded aboard to end the game.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Aurora 10
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) reached on a one-out single in the second inning. With two away, Baker hit an inside-the-park home run to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
The lead stood until the fifth. The Spartans plated six runs in the inning on five hits and an error.
Klicker hit a solo home run with two outs in the sixth to get UWSP within 6-3. The Spartans tacked on four runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach late.
The Pointers will head to Iowa next weekend beginning with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Grinnell on Saturday (April 9).
