AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) drove in all three runs and three pitchers combined as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (7-1) shut out Washington & Jefferson (6-6) by a 3-0 final on Tuesday.
Simmons only had one hit, but it was a two-run home run, as he extended his hitting streak to 16.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) added two hits each. Baumann and
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) each scored a run for the Pointers.
On the mound,
Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) tossed 6.1 scoreless frames with two strikeouts to earn the win.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) pitched 1.2 in relief with a strikeout and
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) struck out one in a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year. With his save, Ferry moved into a tie for sixth in program history with 11 career saves.
Baumann began the UWSP first inning with a ground-rule double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly by Simmons.
UWSP looked to add to its lead in the second.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) led off with a single.
Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) then walked and, with two outs, Matson drew a walk to load the bases. The Presidents got out of the frame stranding the bases loaded.
Offense was at a premium all game, but the Pointers rallied again in the seventh. Matson drew a one-out walk. Then with two down, Simmons belted a two-run home run to left-center to give UWSP a 3-0 lead.
Schultz and Ferry closed to door the rest of the way to secure the win.
The Pointers wrap up the Florida trip on Wednesday (March 23) against No. 24 Johns Hopkins. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m. ET.
