CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (9-3) split games on day two in Florida with a 12-11 setback in extra innings to Farmingdale State (7-1) before defeating Allegheny (0-4) by a 4-2 final.
Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and
Becca Geiyer (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) both had two hits in each game. Lawrence had an RBI and a run scored in both games. Geiyer drove in a run in each game and also scored in game two.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) and
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) each had three hits on the day. Klicker had three RBI in game one and scored three times on the day. Candre had an RBI and a runs scored in game one.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had a hit in each game. She scored three runs on the day and had an RBI.
Game 1: UWSP 11, Farmingdale State 12 (8)
UWSP got on the board in the first. Klicker drew a one-out walk and stole second. She moved to third on a ground out by Traxel and scored on an infield single by Geiyer.
The Rams answered back in the bottom of the first with a leadoff triple, the first of two hits in the frame.
The Pointers went back ahead in the second. Lawrence led off with a single. After an FSC error,
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) singled to load the bases.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) laced a doble to left to plate two. Candre followed with a sac fly and Klicker doubled to make it 5-1.
FSC scored three in the bottom of the second and another in the third to tie the game at 5-5.
Baker drew a leadoff walk in the fourth. She moved to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. Klicker drew a two-out walk and a double steal gave the lead back to UWSP.
The Rams retied the game in the fifth with two walks and a hit, all with two outs.
In the sixth, it was the Pointers taking the lead again. Cibrario singled with one away and stole second. Candre singled to put runners on the corners. Klicker laced a triple to drive in both runners. Traxel followed with a bunt single for a 9-6 lead. With two down,
Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) singled through the left side making it 10-6.
FSC got two runs in the sixth on two hits and tied the game in the seventh with two more runs on two hits.
In the eighth, Lawrence gave UWSP the lead back with a two-out RBI single. The Rams walked off with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth.
Game 2: UWSP 4, Allegheny 2
The Pointers offense kept churning out runs in the first inning of game two. Klicker reached on an error with one away. Consecutive hits by Traxel, Geiyer and Lawrence gave UWSP a 2-0 lead. Two batters later,
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) hit a two-run single as UWSP led 4-0.
UWSP's pitching took over limiting the Gators to five hits and allowed just single runs in the sixth and seventh for the win. Tkach went 3.0 and struck out three.
MacKenzie Honish (Oconto, Wis./Oconto) tossed 3.0 in relief. She struck out four and got the win.
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) pitched the final inning and earned her third save of the year.
The Pointers will return to action on Monday (March 21) with a 9:00 a.m. ET game against St. Catherine before taking on No. 10 Tufts at 11:15 a.m. ET.
