Henwood’s Seventh Inning Triple Lifts Pointers to a Split

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (4-1) needed a game-two rally to split a doubleheader against Coe (5-5) on Friday. UWSP fell in game one, 7-0, and rallied for a 4-2 win in game two, both seven-inning contests.
 
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) had the biggest hit of the day for the Pointers with his first career triple. He drove in two on the play, the decisive runs in game two.
 
Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was the only UWSP hitter with two hits. He got one in each game.
 
Game 1: UWSP 0, Coe 7
The Pointers were able to muster just two hits in the opener. Simmons singled in the first and Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit a single in the fifth.
 
Coe took the lead in the third inning with four runs on three hits. The Kohawks added three more in the seventh to put the game away.
 
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out six over 4.0 in the start. Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) went 2.0 hitless frames in relief and struck out four.
 
Game 2: UWSP 4, Coe 2
Coe struck first in the second game with two runs in the third on just one hit.
 
The UWSP offense finally broke through in the fifth. Lucas Luedtke (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) doubled to start the inning. Two batters later, Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) singled to drive him in an get UWSP within 2-1.
 
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) singled and Henwood walked to load the based. Luedtke drew a walk as well pushing the tying run home, but the Pointers left the bases loaded.
 
In the seventh, Simmons ripped a double into the rightfield corner. Nelson followed with a walk and both moved into scoring position on a deep flyout by Comer. Henwood then stepped in a drilled a triple over the head of the centerfielder to plate both runs.
 
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) earned the win by tossing the final 2.0. He struck out four. Caleb Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) started and went 5.0 with three strikeouts.
 
The Pointers close out the first half of the Florida trip with a 10:00 a.m. ET tilt against St. Scholastica on Saturday (March 19).
