Women’s Hockey Rallies Back to Down CUW in OT

MEQUON, Wis. – Freshman Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored a pair of game-tying goals in the third period as the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (12-13-0) rallied for a 4-3 overtime win at Concordia (Wis.) (11-11-1) in the regular season finale.

The Pointers fell behind as the host Falcons scored twice in the first period. Neither team scored in the second period as UWSP killed off a pair of penalties, including a 5-on-3, to keep the deficit at 2-0 heading to the third.

At the 4:54 mark of the third, Haley Sellers (Kenosha, Wis./Milwaukee Jr. Admirals) got UWSP on the board with a nice backhanded power-play goal. Leising and Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) had assists on the goal.

UWSP would strike again on the power play with Leising scoring at 9:05 of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Anna Cheney (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) and Lauren Wincentsen (Wausau, Wis./West) had helpers on the play.

With just 1:16 left in regulation, CUW went back in front. The Pointers were unfazed and again with the man-advantage, it was Leising with her second tying goal of the game with 32.2 seconds remaining. Dani Heitsman (Janesville, Wis./Rock County Fury) and Mary Kremer (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead Warhawks) had helpers on the goal.

The game went to overtime and the Pointers wasted no time. Maike Zipp (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) won the opening faceoff and Kremer skated in for the game-winner just six seconds into overtime.

Shayna Grais (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) made 22 saves in net for the win. CUW goaltender Kami McCardle made 15 saves.

The Pointers will enjoy a bye weekend and prepare for the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) which begins next week.
