Pointers Hold on Late, Win 32nd-Straight Over UW-Superior

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (7-4) held on late for a 76-72 victory over UW-Superior (3-6), the 32nd-consecutive win in the series.

Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) led the Pointers with a season-high 15 points. Zach Mootz (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 12 and Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) was also in double figures with 11 points. Gillie led UWSP in boards with a season-high eight.

Mootz scored UWSP's first five points and a jumper by AJ Makinen (Waterford, Wis./Muskego) put UWSP ahead 7-2 early. Makinen scored again to spark a 12-2 run with Genrich scoring the final four in the spurt for a 21-10 lead.

Genrich buried a three and Buchanan scored four-straight as UWSP went up by 15. Brennan Timm (West Bend, Wis./West) scored three points late and UWSP held a 39-25 advantage at the half.

Timm scored four early points in the second half as the lead hovered near 10. Makinen and Genrich hit back-to-back threes to push the lead back to 14 at 51-37. Ryan Peterson (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) hit a jumper as the lead hit 16 with 11:52 remaining.

Peterson scored again for UWSP, but the Yellowjackets put up a 14-2 run to close to within four with 7:53 to go. Gillie scored three straight and UWSP made 8-of-10 free throws over the final 4:08 to hold off the late surge by UWS.
