Women’s Basketball Triumphant in Hockett’s Coaching Debut

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) cruised to a 91-47 home win over Northland (0-1) in head coach Matt Hockett's debut.
 
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers with 19 points, one of four in double figures for UWSP. She just missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) had 18 points, including a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. She grabbed seven boards.
 
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) was also in double-digit scoring with 11 points. She had a team-high five assists. Freshman Olivia Hoerl posted 10 points in her collegiate debut.
 
Thomson drained a three amid an 9-0 start to the game by the Pointers. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) had five straight points as UWSP extended the lead to 20-7. Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) buried a three in the final minute as UWSP was up 24-11 after one.
 
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells), Gawlitta and Nies combined for the first 16 points of the second quarter as UWSP pulled away, 40-15. Gawlitta had four more points late as the Pointers held a 46-23 lead at the break.
 
Thomson had six points and Gawlitta added four in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 62-29. Megan Gallagher and Allie Spaltholz scored their first collegiate points late for a 72-36 advantage after three.
 
Late in the fourth quarter, Jenna Sterniske and Mollie Krueger scored their first career points.
 
The Pointers travel to Whitewater for the UWW Tipoff Tournament beginning on Friday (Nov. 11) with a 6:00 p.m. tip against Millikin.
